We have inherited a peculiar belief: that the body is a vehicle for the mind, a machine to be maintained so the brain can do its important work. But what if it is the other way around? What if the body is the primary intelligence, and the mind is simply its translator?
Somatic Intelligence
Somatic practices — movement modalities that prioritize internal sensation over external form — are experiencing a renaissance. From authentic movement to 5Rhythms, from Continuum to contact improvisation, these practices share a common thread: they trust the body’s wisdom.
When you move without choreography, without mirrors, without judgment, something extraordinary happens. The nervous system releases stored tension. Emotions that have been held in the fascia begin to surface and complete their natural cycle. New neural pathways form.
Try This: The Shake
Stand with feet hip-width apart. Begin to bounce gently on your knees. Let the vibration travel up through your body. Shake your hands, your arms, your shoulders. Let your jaw soften. Let sound emerge if it wants to.
Continue for three to five minutes. Then stop. Stand perfectly still. Close your eyes. Feel the aliveness coursing through you — the tingling, the warmth, the subtle pulsation.
This is your frequency. This is what it feels like to be fully alive in a body that is no longer bracing against life.
